SPIRITED COUNTRY singer Barbara Mandrell stars in a new network outing

”Something Special” on CBS-Ch. 2 at 7:30 p.m. The one-hour show was taped before a near-fatal car crash last September put her in a Nashville hospital for 19 days with a broken right leg, concussion and lacerations.

Twice selected Entertainer of the Year by the Country Music Association, Mandrell shows good form as a singer, dancer and saxophone player as she pitches into everything from gospel to `40s hits (”Rose of San Antone”) to a punk tribute to New York. Helped by fancy tape editing, the dance numbers are socko though in-between patter is cluttered with too many tributes from fans. Guest stars are Roy Acuff and Lee Greenwood. As for Barbara, she`s on the mend in real life. She told a press conference last week she plans to be in a recording studio next month and will film a ”romance book” movie for CBS later this year.
