DE PAUL sophomore Dallas Comegys will not miss any games because of a recent flare-up of a chronic stomach disorder. But coach Joey Meyer believes that the illness is the cause of Comegys` recent poor play.

”He`s weaker,” Meyer said. ”It has affected his play, and he`s taken a lot of flak for it. It`s only fair for Dallas` sake that people know about it.”

Comegys suffers from a condition known as ”irritable colon” for which there is no cure. ”There`s no medicine he can take for it,” said trainer Mike McCormick. ”He just has to learn to deal with the emotions that cause it. We`re trying to help him deal with the stress.

”There has been no thought of professional help. It isn`t necessary at this point. If it gets worse, we might have to think about that. The way he`s been playing lately might have put extra stress on him.”

Comegys has had several poor performances in the last few weeks, including Saturday night`s loss to Alabama-Birmingham, when he had only six points and one rebound.

McCORMICK SAID the primary symptoms of the ailment are diarrhea, upset stomach and loss of appetite. It is a common condition, he said, adding, ”I have it myself.”

Comegys first was affected by the ailment last year and ”in the last few weeks he`s had a flare-up,” said McCormick. ”It makes him more fatigued than normal.”

”I`ve been watching films of our first six or seven games,” said Meyer, ”and he is so much more active and aggressive. He realizes that, but he`s been struggling physically.”

The condition has been aggravated by a recent heavy head and chest cold. Comegys had a 102-degree temperature Tuesday and didn`t practice. But Meyer expects him to be ready to play Saturday when the Blue Demons meet Houston in the Horizon.
