Georgetown was hammering Villanova on the boards at the end of their game a few Saturdays ago, and NBC`s Al McGuire declared–on the air– that Villanova has ”got to get those two big white guys in there (and off the bench).” This innocuous comment was laughed off by everyone but the New York Times` Ira Berkow, who wrote that McGuire shouldn`t bring race into his commentary and suggested that McGuire would not have said ”those two big black guys” if the players on the bench had been black. That critique was relayed to McGuire, who replied: ”Tell Ira he`s absolutely right. If they woulda been two big black guys, I woulda known their names.”
