I would like to comment on the Jan. 21 Tempo article about the Upper Crust Dating Service.

”Matchmaker” Heather Stern is quoted as saying: ”I accept no women who are overweight. I have no one for them.” And regarding fat men: ”If they are of a high enough business stature, I can usually do something for them.

”This is not to say that we discriminate. . . .”

First off, if she can place fat men, why not women? These women have money, grace and just as much of a need as anyone else.

Second, I would say she is discriminating–against overweight women. And who is to define ”fat”? Is it the rule according to Ms. Stern?

If Ms. Stern`s 600 clients feel the same as she does, they certainly deserve each other. I find it hard to believe that these 600 people know of these discriminatory practices–as well as her lack of feelings, as evidenced further in the article. In explaining how she deals ”diplomatically” with the dreaded fat person, she says: ”Look . . . with the weight you`re at right now we might not be able to do anything for you . . . put yourself on a program and come back in a few months.” I`ll bet the woman went home and committed suicide.
