Some people, we know, enjoy nothing more than getting together with a few like-minded companions for a good, solid evening of puffing out their cheeks, bulging their eyes, scrunching up their nose and doing funny things with their lips.

For these people, we have good news: The first Midwest Girning Contest will be held at 9 p.m. Wednesday at She-Nannigans, 16 W. Division St. Girning, which etymologists believe to be a corruption of the word grinning, is the act of making a funny or grotesque face.

Wednesday`s contest will be hosted by Rich Koz, also known to Channel 32 viewers as the Son of Svengoolie. Facemakers who wish to participate are advised that hands, makeup or other aids may not be used, and the girner must hold his or her facial configuration for a count of five. The first-place winner will receive $300, second place $150 and third place $50. There is no admission charge or entry fee, and a portion of sales at the bar will go to the Easter Seal Society of Metropolitan Chicago.

Competition is expected to be heated, so you might want to start practicing right now, wherever you are.
