Processing of federal tax returns is running 30 percent behind last year`s pace, meaning a ”four or five-day longer wait” for taxpayers awaiting refunds, the commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service said in an interview published Sunday.

In an interview with U.S. News & World Report, IRS Commissioner Roscoe Egger said the delay is caused by problems with a new computer system resulting in ”maybe a four or five-day longer wait” for refunds.

Egger said the government loses an estimated $90 billion in tax revenues a year, much of it from individuals who don`t understand the tax rules.
