The Meat Puppets are a young three-man band from Phoenix, who fall loosely into the burgeoning ”acoustic underground” category.

With this, their third album for SST, a small California label, the guitar-bass-drums combo follows a path that fuses their folk, country and subtler punk influences (the hard-core thrash has gone by the boards) into an intriguing Southwestern-flavored sound that`s both amateurish and inspired. Singer-songwriter Curt Kirkwood`s flat, monochromatic vocals are hardly the stuff of commercial success, but ”Up On the Sun” shines in its earthy, unpretentious and frequently poetic originality.
