Edward Hines Lumber Co. blamed reduced wholesale volume and a seasonal loss from 10 retail stores acquired last year for a bigger net loss in the first quarter of 1985 than a year earlier.
The Chicago-based firm said its net loss widened to $842,000 in this year`s quarter from $696,000.
Total sales edged up to $49.6 million from $49.5 million a year earlier, but retail sales jumped 44 percent, to $23.6 million. Total wholesale sales fell 21 percent, to $26 million, reflecting unfavorable weather conditions, the closing of one unprofitable distribution center last year and the previously announced reduction of the company`s lumber brokerage business.
