Kristy Swain, Conant–The senior won the state singles championship, beating West Aurora`s Julie Daw 11-4, 11-9.
BASEBALL
John Hickey, De La Salle–The senior shortstop had 17 hits in 20 at-bats and drove in 20 runs as the Meteors took over first place in the Catholic League South Division.
Al Michalowski, Fenwick–The junior infielder had 10 hits in 14 at-bats, including a grand slam home run that beat St. Francis de Sales.
Derek Smart, Holy Cross–The sophomore went 10-for-15 in five games, with 11 RBIs and 2 home runs.
GYMNASTICS
Steve Kodosky, St. Francis–Kodosky won the vaulting title in the Addison Trail sectional with a 9.60.
Mike Califf, Glenbard East–The senior won the all-around championship at Addison Trail with an 8.59 average. He also won the horizontal bars with a 9.2.
SOFTBALL
Jill Justin, Richards–The senior all-state shortstop was 13-for-21, including 3 triples and 3 homers. She hit for the cycle against Thornton Fractional South.
Sue Wydra, Hinsdale South–The senior pitcher/third baseman won three games on the mound and was 4-for-7 at the plate.
Bernie Coffman, Zion-Benton–The senior pitcher won 4 games, allowing just one earned run, tossed a no-hitter and two 1-hitters. She`s 19-0 with a 0.61 earned-run average.
TENNIS
Jack Salerno, West Aurora–The junior won the Upstate Eight Conference singles title, beating Lake Park`s Tony Cruz 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
TRACK AND FIELD
Lisa Chess, South Shore–The sophomore ran a state best in the 200 meters of 23.9 seconds in Public League qualifying for the state meet and won the 100 in 11.8.
Harold Leonard, Mt. Carmel–He ran a state-best 47.4 in the 400 meters and won the 200 in 21.0 at the Catholic League meet.
Steve Miller, Elk Grove–The senior ran the state`s fastest 3,200 meters
(9:06.92) at Friday`s Mid-Suburban League meet.
Tonya Scott, St. Francis Academy–The defending Class AA state 100-meter champion ran a state-best 11.6 in the 100 at the Batavia sectional.
Lance Stewart, Tinley Park–The junior won the shot put (51 feet 3 inches) and discus (170-4) in the SICA Central meet.
Nadine Wille, Willowbrook–The sophomore won the 400 meters in 57.4 and ran legs of 57.8 on the winning 800 medley relay and the second-place 1,600 relay.
