Symbol-laden garment care labels needn`t be a puzzle.

They indicate whether to iron, use bleach, wash or take to a dry cleaner. To learn about them, send a stamped, addressed envelope to the Neighborhood Cleaners` Association, 116 E. 27th St., New York, N.Y. 10016, requesting the pamphlet ”Consumer Guide to Clothing Care 1985.”

Along with deciphering the symbols, the guide tells how to cope with hard-to-care-for garments–those made in suede or leather, those sewn with sequins, pure silks–and how long to expect clothes to last.
