In response to public outcry, state Lottery Supt. Michael Jones decided Tuesday to retain the 6-out-of-44-numbers Lotto game format. Last month Jones, who is to leave his post in June, suggested to the Lottery Control Board that the format be changed to a numerical field of 6 out of 48 to make winning more difficult and allow for more rollovers. Under the present format, the odds of hitting six numbers on a $1 play are 1 in 3.5 million. Changing the numerical field to 48 would have increased the odds to 1 in 6 million. Jones said that since he made his suggestion to increase the field, his office has received
”more than 300 letters urging us to retain the present format.”
