In the beginning, circa 1959, there was one. ”Gidget,” that is, starring Sandra Dee as the perky teenager who romped with surfers
”Moondoggie” (played by James Darren) and ”Kahoona” (Cliff Robertson)
in sunny California. The movie was so successful that it inspired spinoffs such as ”Gidget Gets Married,” ”Gidget Goes Hawaiian,” ”Gidget Grows Up” and the 1965-66 ”Gidget” TV series starring Sally Field.
The latest entry is ”Gidget`s Summer Reunion” at 7 p.m. Thursday on WFLD-Ch. 32. Gone are those carefree beach party days. In this two-hour movie, Gidget`s seven-year marriage to Jeff, a.k.a ”Moondoggie,” is showing the pressures of two careers and mortgage payments. Then there`s Jeff`s boss, who wants more than office work out of her employee.
To help matters, Gidget (played by Caryn Richman) plans a surprise 30th birthday reunion for Jeff (Dean Butler) and his former surfer buddies. But things don`t come off as planned.
