Federal drug agents huddled inside a steamy warehouse Monday and marveled at the latest smuggling technique, cocaine stuffed inside phony fiberglass Colombian yams.

As of late Monday, after checking only one-quarter of the 3,000 boxes labeled ”Colombian yams,” agents had found 300 pounds of cocaine inside the phony yams mixed among the shipment of real yams.

Authorities said the total haul may be ”well over” 1,200 pounds of cocaine, worth about $16 million wholesale.

The cocaine was stuffed in plastic bags, wrapped with paper and coated with fiberglass, which was colored and textured to ”the identical appearance of a legitimate yam,” the Drug Enforcement Administration said.
