In response to Andy Rooney`s column on affirmative action, ”The jury is still out on these issues,” he seems to have come to an illogical conclusion when he says of firefighters and police officers who have scored higher on the exams that they are ”better at the job.”

It`s one thing to know the rules and quite another to apply practical know-how on the job.

If he truly feels that ”the rest of us owe blacks something” for the injustices they have experienced in America, he realizes too that opportunity must be given to blacks. After all, debt infers payment in one form or another.
