In a recent editorial The Tribune referred to pandas as ”a type of bear.” The giant panda may look like a bear, but it is in the same family as racoons. Bears are in a different family. Other types of pandas show the relationship to raccoons more clearly, but the giant panda is no more a bear than a dog is.
