Hothead broke out of his two-race slump Saturday night by winning the $50,000 Midwest Derby pace at Sportsman`s Park with the fastest mile in the 21-year history of the race.

His time of 1:55 3/5, which also was the best of his 28-race career, shaved four-fifths of a second off the previous record set by Perfect Blue Chip in 1982.

Hothead was a decisive winner, defeating the second horse, Money Supply, by 2 1/2 lengths for his 25th triumph in 28 lifetime starts.

”Nothing seemed to go right for him the last couple times,” said driver-trainer Mike Borys, referring to third-place finishes in Hothead`s previous two races at Sportsman`s this month.

”We made our own luck tonight. He acted like he wanted to go, so I let him have his head.”
