Firestone Tire & Rubber Co. posted net income of $13 million for its fiscal third quarter, a sharp drop from the $48 million earned a year earlier. Earnings per share fell to 31 cents from $1.06. Sales dropped to $994 million from $1.03 billion. The company blamed the profit plunge largely on a $20 million decline in income from continuing operations. The company reported operating income of $9 million in the third quarter, which ended July 31, down from $29 million. In the first nine months, net income was $50 million, or $1.18 a share, down from $85 million, or $1.80 a share, a year earlier. Sales fell to $2.83 billion from $2.96 billion.
