The government Wednesday sold $9.26 billion of two-year notes at an average yield of 8.89 percent, slightly lower than the previous auction three weeks ago. There were $19.3 billion in tenders for the 8 7/8 percent coupon note, which sold at an average price of 99.973, with 100 representing par, or face, value. The 8.89 percent average yield was the lowest since 8.51 percent on July 1 and slightly below 8.98 percent on July 31.
