Who to watch–QB Mike Howard, RB Larry Emery, OG Bob Landsee, LB Craig Raddatz, LB Rick Graf, LB Tim Jordan, LB Michael Reid, CB Nate Odomes.

What to watch–Linebacking will be the solid core of a rebuilt defense. An injury (stress fracture of foot) to tackle Lance Branaman and the brief defection of Jim Kmet could slow the progress of the defensive line. QB Howard ”in another league would be heralded as very good,” says coach Dave McClain. New receiver Fred Bobo is talented but ”not as knowledgeable as he needs to be,” according to McClain. Emery, who rushed for 185 yards against Michigan, is the key to offensive success. Fullback is solid whether it`s Joe Armentrout (115 yards rushing in the Hall of Fame Bowl) or Brian Bonner. Landsee is the only veteran on the offensive line, whose smallest starter is 6-5, 275. The kicking game is a strength.
