St. Elsewhere” returns for its fourth season minus a few familiar faces at 9 p.m. Wednesday on NBC-Ch. 5. Out are doctors Annie Cavanero (played by Cynthia Sikes) and Cathy Martin (Barbara Whinnery) and nurse Shirley Daniels
(Ellen Bry).
In is Alfre Woodard, who won an Emmy for a ”Hill Street Blues” episode and who joins the series in the first show for a few appearances as Dr. Roxanne Turner, new head of the St. Eligius obstetrics-gynecology department. Though she won`t get along with Dr. Mark Craig (Williams Daniels), she and Dr. Phillip Chandler (Denzel Washington) will have a romance.
Dr. Donald Westphall (Ed Flanders), who quit the hospital in the last show of last season, returns in next week`s episode after fighting the famine in Ethiopia.
Wednesday, a talk by Dr. Jack Morrison (David Morse) upsets Chandler.
