Maryland got tired of losing to West Virginia at home. The Terps had lost five straight, dating back to 1966, to the Mountaineers in College Park, Md., before Saturday`s 28-0 victory. It was the first time West Virginia had been shut out in 32 games and was the Mountaineers` worst defeat since 1980.
Memphis State proved again to be a tough opponent for Florida State. Derek Schmidt, whose field goal on the final play enabled the Seminoles to tie the Tigers last year, had to kick four field goals in a 19-10 victory. FSU`s defense held MSU to just two first downs in the second half. ”I guess winning is the bottom line,” said FSU coach Bobby Bowden. ”I`ve played a lot of great games and lost.”
Howard Schnellenberger got his first victory as Louisville beat Western Kentucky 23-14 before a record crowd of 36,914 in Louisville.
Three of the Southeastern Conference`s top teams won. Alabama scored touchdowns on its first five possessions to rout Cincinnati 45-10. John Little made two interceptions, including one in the end zone in the final minute, and Georgia scored three times in the fourth quarter to pull out a 20-13 victory over Clemson. Dalton Hilliard (151 yards and a TD on 25 carries) and Garry James (96 yards and a TD on 14 carries) sparked Louisiana State to a 17-3 victory over Colorado State.
