Short of giving up your own bed, where can you put up overnight guests to assure a restful night? Pillows scattered over the floor might work. So could sleeping bags. But neither are as versatile, as comfortable or as stylish as the latest finds in dual-purpose furniture.

There`s a broad range of choices if you`re looking for an emergency bed. Chair beds and sofa beds are sleeker than ever. Japan`s version of the mattress, the futon, doubles as a chair with or without a frame. Lightweight foam furniture is an old standby. And there are inflatable mattresses that you can press into service if you`ve got a hair dryer and 60 seconds.
