For the fourth straight week, Penn State was victorious without being overpowering. Dave Clark ran 76 yards to set up a touchdown and Steve Smith went 63 yards for a fourth-quarter score, pacing the Nittany Lions to a 17-10 triumph Saturday over Rutgers in East Rutherford, N.J. PSU`s largest victory margin is seven points, against East Carolina last week and Rutgers.
”We have not improved as a team since the week before we played Maryland (in the opener),” said State coach Joe Paterno. ”We`re not ever going to improve until we get healthy a few weeks in a row.” PSU is banged up on offense, the most serious injury being to running back D.J. Dozier, who didn`t play. State still rushed for 260 yards, including 107 by Clark.
Army keeps rollin` along. The Cadets (3-0) rushed for 449 yards on 79 attempts in a 41-3 romp over Penn. Army outscored the defending Ivy League champs 27-0 in the second half. The defeat ended the Quakers` five-game winning streak and was Army`s sixth straight victory. Penn`s last loss was to Army, 48-13, last year.
There was no ”Hail Mary” by Doug Flutie this year. This time Miami
(Fla.) used the big play to trounce Boston College 45-10. Selwyn Brown celebrated his 20th birthday by returning an interception a school-record 100 yards for a TD, Vinny Testaverde threw for two TDs, including an 82-yarder to Brian Blades, and J.C. Penny scored on a 31-yard run.

Penn State 17, Rutgers 10–Kevin Woods scored from 4 yards out after Clark`s long run, and Massimo Manca added a 53-yard field goal. Clark`s run broke a Giants Stadium record for a college game of 73 yards set by Notre Dame`s Jim Stone against Navy in 1980. Manca broke the stadium record for a field goal. Notre Dame`s Harry Oliver had a 50-yarder in 1980. The Nittany Lions are 13-1 against the Scarlet Knights (0-2-1), their only loss coming in their first meeting in 1918.
Army 41, Penn 3–Doug Black ran for 120 yards to spearhead the attack in Philadelphia. Bill Lampley added 95 yards and a TD on 14 carries. Rob Healy ran for 69 yards and a TD. He also passed for 76 yards. Clarence Jones scored twice. Penn is 1-1.
Miami (Fla.) 45, Boston College 10–The Hurricanes (2-1) turned the game into a rout with three fourth-quarter TDs in Foxboro, Mass. They got 24 of their points after turnovers. The Eagles are 2-3.
West Virginia 10, Pitt 10–Tony Reda scored from a yard out on fourth down with 4:38 left to rally the Mountaineers (2-1-1) in Morgantown, W. Va. The Panthers (1-2-1) led 10-0 at halftime, but missed two field-goal attempts in the third quarter.
Colgate 21, Cornell 20–Tim Walsh scored on an 86-yard reception and Neil Viserto prevented a two-point conversion pass with 1:16 left in Ithaca, N.Y. Colgate (2-1) has beaten Cornell (0-2) six straight times.
Other games–Brian Forster set an NCAA record for tight ends with 327 yards on 18 receptions, but Rhode Island (2-2) still lost 32-27 to Brown (1-1) in Providence. Tom Ehrhardt was 30 of 67 for 461 yards and 3 TDs but had 5 interceptions for the Rams. . . . Andre Garron rushed for a school-record 250 yards and 2 TDs to lead New Hampshire (2-1) to a 23-7 victory over Dartmouth
(0-2) in Durham, N.H. Garron tied a Division I-AA record by rushing for 200 yards for the fifth time in his career. . . . Dave Hock threw for a TD and ran for another and Gill Fenerty rushed for 204 yards and 3 TDs on a school-record 37 carries to pace Holy Cross (2-1) to a 22-6 victory over Delaware (2-2) in Worcester, Mass. . . . Bruce McIntyre ran for 105 yards and 2 TDs as Lafayette (2-1) downed Columbia (0-2) 20-0 in Easton, Pa., running the Lions` losing streak to 13 games. John Williamson averaged 34.4 yards on 9 punts for Columbia. The Lions` former punter, Peter Murphy, quit the team after he was criticized by coach Jim Garrett. . . . Marty Horn threw for 256 yards and 2 TDs to lift Lehigh (2-1) to a 34-13 victory over Princeton (1-1) in Princeton, N.J. Horn set school records for career passing and total offense. . . . Brian White threw a 60-yard TD pass to Terry Denson and Rob Steinberg kicked a 43-yard field goal to give Harvard (2-0) a 10-3 victory over Massachusetts (2-2) in Cambridge, Mass. . . . Hurricane Gloria forced a one-day postponement of the Connecticut-Yale game in New Haven, Conn.
