Top-ranked Mother McAuley and No. 2 Marian Catholic were clearly the class of the Rich East tournament which ended Saturday with the defending Class AA state champion Mighty Macs winning 12-15, 15-2, 15-9 in Park Forest South. The volleyball gladiators, who have already played twice this season, are likely to see plenty more of each other. There`s a Girls Catholic Athletic Conference match Oct. 10 in Chicago Heights, they`ll probably run into each other in the Maine West Pumpkin Tournament Oct. 18-19 in Des Plaines, they will no doubt be paired in the GCAC tournament and they`re a good bet to find each other somewhere along the state tournament road which begins in late October. That prospect makes Mother McAuley coach Nancy Pedersen cringe. ”I`m going to run out of tricks, there are just so many times you can trick a team,” said Pedersen. ”That`s why it`s not very good to play a team over and over again. I don`t like the odds coming up.” Marian Catholic coach Kathy McGrath, whose team`s only two losses this season have been to McAuley, can`t wait to see the Macs again. ”Next time, on Oct. 10 in Marian`s home ground, we`ll look for Marian Catholic to go after them a little more,” said McGrath. . . . The Rich East all-tournament team: Janet Moyla and Colleen Boyle of Mother McAuley; Shelley Brzozowski and Nancy Gaspadarek of Marian Catholic;

Pam Sanders of Oak Lawn; Cheryl Prihar of Oak Forest; Taryn Collins of Oak Park; Michelle Gordey of Riverside-Brookfield; Barb Blizzard of Richards;

Nancy Brookhart of Glenbard West; Laurie Stefanon of Sandburg; Noelle Zientara of Andrew; Maureen McLaughlin of Homewood-Flosssmoor, Kelly White, Maria and Candi Sederwall of Quincy. Brookhart, Collins and Prihar were repeat selections from the 1984 all-tournament team.

Deanna Conoscenti set a pair of meet records to lead Rolling Meadows to victory in the Trojan Invitational Saturday at Downers Grove North. The junior, who finished third in the 500-yard freestyle at last year`s state meet, set a meet record in the 500 with a time of 5 minutes 12.65 seconds. She also set a record in the 200 individual medley (2:15.99). Rolling Meadows, which established a meet record in the 400 freestyle relay (3:51.87), finished with 225 points. Runner-up Lockport had 215. Gena Wilczak (2:06.11, 200 freestyle) and Meg Martin (1:08.93, 100 breaststroke) set meet records for the Porters. Martin was fourth in the breaststroke at last year`s state meet. . . . New Trier tops the latest rankings according to Swimming in Illinois Magazine. The five-time defending state champion Trevians topped Hinsdale Central, which replaced Deerfield in the No. 2 spot. Deerfield, which slipped to fourth behind Glenbrook North, held that ranking in the initial ratings. St. Charles is fifth. Rounding out the top 10 are Maine South, Naperville North, Palatine, Lyons Township and Homewood-Flossmoor. . . . Naperville North`s 93-79 dual-meet victory Friday at Hinsdale Central was the Huskies`

first ever in the Red Devils` pool. Former Naperville North swimmer Sue Johnson, who moved to Mission Viejo, Calif., after setting a state meet 100-yard breaststroke record last November, is ranked 30th in the world at 200 meters. The No. 1 American, Channon Hermstad of Mission Viejo, ranks 17th.

Golf

Homewood-Flossmoor`s girls started the season with a dual-meet loss to Naperville North, but the Vikings are back on track. H-F won the Naperville North Invitational Saturday at Wedgewood Golf Course and Naperville North coach Ed Rosenthal wasn`t surprised. ”Jan Mueller does such a nice job,” he said of the Viking coach. ”She knows the game as well as any coach around. She does a great job with her kids.” The Naperville North tournament includes most of the top teams in the Chicago area except Regina Dominican. H-F was a handy winner. The Vikings shot 358 to second-place Barrington`s 370. Barrington`s Kim Oviatt was medalist with an 84 on the par-74 layout. Springfield High`s Nichole Inkel finished second at 85. Homewood-Flossmoor`s Jill Darnal and Allison Cohn each had 86s. Teammate Kristen Milligan, a freshman, was ninth at 91. . . . Hinsdale Central`s Jane Mikita had a day she`ll never forget at the Naperville North Invitational and chances are her father, hockey Hall of Famer Stan Mikita, and mother won`t forget it either. Mikita, who was fifth in the tournament, had a hole-in-one on the 175-yard, par-3 13th hole as her parents watched. . . . Hoffman Estates` boys` program got a big boost when the Hawks won the Conant Invitational at Poplar Creek Saturday. Hoffman Estates shot 317 to 320 for second-place Lake Park. Junior Al Mategrano led the Hawks, finishing third with a 75, while senior Henry Curcio tied for fifth with a 76. Junior Al Lewis had an 82 and senior Mark Tomlinson had an 84. . . . President Reagan, a golfer who sticks to the right side of the fairway, will receive a Hoffman Estates visor next week when principal Dennis Garber goes to Washington as Hoffman Estates High School is honored by the Department of Education as being one of the top schools in the country. . . . Lockport won the 32-team Rich East Invitational with senior Mark Wessel leading the way. Wessel shot a 4-over 75, as did Sandburg`s John Denning, but Wessel won medalist honors. The Porters also got a seventh-place finish from Andy Gliwa with a 78. . . . Rockford Guilford stamped itself as a state contender with a 10-shot victory in the Sterling Invitational over Pekin. The Vikings, with medalist Grant Halverson shooting a 3-under 68, shot 295 to Pekin`s 305. Barrington, with Dave Koenen shooting a 75 for 10th place, was third at 308.

Tennis

Maine West`s Sharla Barone, who lost the state singles title to Young`s Katrina Adams last year, didn`t play much tennis this summer. Still, the sophomore is on the winning track. Barone defeated Trish Perillo of Glenbrook South 6-1, 3-6, 6-0 to capture the No. 1 singles title at Saturday`s Maine West Invitational. Libertyville and Glenbrook South scored 30 points apiece to tie for the team title. . . . In a battle of state singles contenders, Deerfield freshman Holly Lloyd defeated Oak Park`s Stacy Berg 6-3, 6-3 in Saturday`s Oak Park Invitational. In a doubles match of equal importance, New Trier`s Kristen Kepler and Jamie Henikoff defeated Kristen Beaudoin and Anna Sloan of Oak Park, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. Despite the defeats, Oak Park edged New Trier 39-35 for the team title. . . . Hinsdale Central junior CeCe Cahill, another of the state`s top singles players, missed Saturday`s Prospect Invitational with a bad cold. Cahill missed an early-season match with a sore back. Diane Hulse of Lake Forest defeated Homewood-Flossmoor`s Jennifer Pavlic 6-1, 6-1 in No. 1 singles action at Prospect.

Cross country

York boys` coach Joe Newton is calling his top five of Scott Brooks, Dave Braun, Zack Boudreau, Bob Berger and Mike Browning the Killer Bees. ”They all start with Bs,” he said. ”We haven`t killed anybody yet, though. We`ve got to get our stingers out.” The Dukes will test those stingers Saturday in the Peoria Invitational, which is run on the state-meet course at Detweiller Park. . . . Lake Park`s Andre Fomby used a different tactic in his easy victory at the Du Page County meet Saturday. Fomby was hard to find during the first half-mile, but then burst out of the pack to easily win the 3-mile race in 14 minutes 34.5 seconds. ”I went out slower today and that helped,” he said.

”In the bigger meets with the more competition, I have to take it easy at first. This is the first time I`ve done it. I`m usually at 4:55 in the first mile and today I was at 4:57. Those seconds count. Coach (Ed Wordzala) said I could spare two seconds). . . . York`s girls were not pushed at all. Vicky Brown followed the 1-2 finish of Mary Beth Driscoll and Nancy Klatt with a fifth-place finish. Melissa Mack was seventh, Sue Ables 15th and Suzanne Lewandowski 16th. . . . Downers Grove North finished fifth Saturday, but coach Bruce Ritter wasn`t disappointed. The Trojans ran without No. 1 runner Caroline Tracy and No. 3 runner Jenny Edmonds. Tracy is recovering from a stress fracture in her foot, which has kept her out two weeks, while Edmonds had the flu. Tracy has started running again. . . . Lake Forest`s Jim Gibson continues to impress. The Scout senior won his fourth invitational Saturday at the Roy Gummerson Invitational at Oak Park. . . . Homewood-Flossmoor won the team title at the Gummerson with Don Bonfiglio leading the Vikings with a fifth-place finish in 15:28.5. Bonfiglio came into the meet as H-F`s No. 4 runner and ended up the fourth different Viking leader in as many

invitationals. Mike Rakov was seventh in 15:32.6, Mike Darby was 12th, Brian Tupper 19th and Ron Fagan 21st. H-F, ranked No. 1 in the Timely Times Power Rankings, had 64 points to 88 for Conant and 136 for Oak Park.
