Tom Seaver, who gained his 300th career victory earlier this season, reached another pinnacle Friday night at Comiskey Park. He recorded his 3,535th strikeout in the White Sox`s 7-5 victory over the Seattle Mariners and moved into third place on the all-time strikeout list.

Seaver passed Gaylord Perry with the fifth of his seven strikeouts against Seattle and finished his 19th big-league season with a record of 16-11 and 304 career victories.

”My back really hurt before the game and I was pondering whether or not I should pitch,” said Seaver, ”but I decided to give it a whirl and it worked out, thanks to great relief pitching from Dave Wehrmeister.”

Wehrmeister held the Mariners hitless over the last four innings to pick up his second save.

Ron Kittle`s 25th homer, a two-run shot in a four-run second inning, held up as the margin of victory.
