Army`s ground game would make any infantryman jealous. The Cadets rolled to a 59-16 victory Saturday over Yale by rushing for 403 yards on 63 attempts. It was the most points by Army (4-0) since a 68-6 triumph over Colgate in 1958. The 59 points also were the most scored against a Yale team.
Shades of the glory days for Pitt. The Panthers (2-2-1) had eight sacks, made two interceptions and blocked a punt in a 42-7 romp over South Carolina. It was the most points for Pitt since a 55-10 victory over Louisville on Oct. 15, 1983. The loss was South Carolina`s worst since a 52-14 defeat against Georgia in 1974. ”We`ve waited since August for this kind of game,” said Pitt safety Teryl Austin.
Boston College`s offense has struggled all season, but Rutgers` offense sputtered even more Saturday. BC committed three turnovers, but Rutgers had seven to help the Eagles to a 20-10 victory in a downpour in East Rutherford, N.J.
Syracuse routed Louisville 48-0. It was the Orangemen`s most lopsided victory since a 50-0 decision over Richmond in 1963.
Top games
Army 59, Yale 16–Doug Black rushed for 122 yards and a TD in West Point, N.Y. The Cadets scored on their first two possessions. Later in the game, Army scored on five straight drives. Eight different players scored for Army. The Bulldogs (1-1) had five turnovers.
Pitt 42, South Carolina 7–John Congemi threw for a TD and ran for another in Pittsburgh. He was 17 of 29 for 191 yards. Pitt led 422-156 in yardage, including a 224-37 edge in rushing. The Gamecocks (2-3) have lost three in a row.
Boston College 20, Rutgers 10–Shawn Halloran (9 of 20 for 93 yards)
threw a 36-yard TD pass to Kelvin Martin. David Rooney kicked two field goals and Tyrone Taylor scored on an 18-yard run. BC is 3-3. The Scarlet Knights are 0-3-1, their worst start since going 0-5 in 1954.
Syracuse 48, Louisville 0–Don McPherson, making his first start of the season, scored two TDs and passed for another in Syracuse, N.Y. The Orangemen (2-2) scored on six of their first seven possessions for a 38-0 lead. The Cardinals are 1-4.
West Virginia 24, Virginia Tech 9–John Holifield (117 yards on 27 carries) scored on runs of 3 and 17 yards in Morgantown, W. Va. The Mountaineers (3-1-1) have won five straight over the Hokies (1-4).
Penn 46, Columbia 14–Brad Heinz set up two first-half TDs with interceptions and Eric Rutherford scored twice, including a 95-yard kickoff return, in New York. The Quakers (2-1, 2-0) have a 10-game Ivy League winning streak. The Lions (0-3, 0-2) have lost 14 in a row and have won only 5 of their last 66 games.
Brown 17, Princeton 0–Jamie Potkul ran for 155 yards on 32 carries and a TD in Providence, R.I. It was the first shutout by Brown (2-1, 1-1) in 65 games. Princeton (1-2, 1-1) was blanked for the first time since 1930. The Tigers gained just 133 yards.
Other games–Bruce McIntyre rushed for 200 yards on 30 carries and scored the winning TD on a 55-yard run as Lafayette (3-1) beat Cornell (0-3) 17-3 in Ithaca, N.Y. It was the first time a Cornell defense has allowed a player to gain 200 yards rushing since the school began playing football in 1887. . . . Chuck Doyle`s second TD run, a 1-yarder with 3:14 left, gave Holy Cross (3-1) a 17-14 victory over Dartmouth (0-3) in Hanover, N.H.
