The Chicago visitor, who grew up on a Downstate farm, had been invited to be an escort at the Oakbrook Polo Club Ball. But it didn`t make sense to him: ”If these polo people have so much money, how come they don`t have their parties downtown in some big, fancy hotel, like normal rich people?”

The polo ball drew 325 guests to the $125-a-plate benefit for the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago. It was held in a huge tent pitched in the middle of the swank Graue Mill country estate complex in Hinsdale.

”Anyway, the roast beef is really good,” the visitor said, cutting into his prime rib. ”That woman over there is wearing a dress that`s going to be on next month`s cover of Vogue. I overheard her telling someone that just before she went into the porta-potty.”
