The Du Page County Housing Authority soon will begin screening single parents on record as seeking subsidized housing in the county to determine whether they can qualify for a new federal program designed to remove them permanently from dependence on public aid. Low-income single parents selected to participate in the program would have to be motivated to become totally independent and self-sufficient, according to Marilyn Duncan, housing outreach coordinator for the county. Based on a needs assessment of those chosen to participate, the authority will tailor a personal ”self-sufficiency program” that should supply the additional education and job-skills training needed for a person to become independent of state and federal aid, Duncan said.
