They didn`t have to go to Uptown to have a good time. They already were there, celebrating the diversity of their neighborhood at a costume party in the new Riviera.

Benefiting the Uptown Chamber of Commerce and the Uptown Chicago Commission, the ”Celebrate Uptown” event brought out longtime residents and newcomers, as well as area business people.

”I`ve been a member of the Uptown Chicago Commission since 1956,” said Flo Bezazian, who attended the party with her husband, Paul, an advertising agency owner. ”Of course, we remember the Riviera as a movie theater.

”I really feel that Uptown is coming back. The influx of people has been very interesting over the years. We`ve stayed because we love it.”

Introducing singer Oscar Brown Jr. was master of ceremonies Sig Sakowicz, who has returned to Chicago radio after 13 years in Las Vegas. After only a month back in the land of four seasons, he already has caught a cold. Why did the Sakowiczes return? ”Well, one, we were in Vegas 13 years and for 12 1/2 my wife, Gina, didn`t like it there,” he explained. ”Two, we have five grown children and four grandchildren in this area.”

Sig`s on the air these days from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday through Friday over WVVX-FM (103.1) and, as always, is never at a loss for words.
