William ”The Refrigerator” Perry helped ”Late Night With David Letterman” set a viewership record in Chicago Monday while the Mains and the Hazards of ”North and South” pushed ABC into the No. 1 network spot last week.

In Chicago, ”Late Night” doubled its usual audience and got a 12.3 rating and a 46 share. The show was watched in 376,761 households.

Meanwhile, an estimated 100 million viewers tuned in some or all of

”North and South,” the 12-hour ABC mini-series that premiered Sunday, Nov. 3. That premiere episode finished in fourth place in the previous week`s A. C. Nielsen ratings. The five remaining parts placed in the top 10 spots in the following week`s ratings.

The David Wolper (”Roots,” ”The Thorn Birds”) extravaganza moved ABC into first place–for the second time this season–with a 19.9 rating and a 30 share, and into a tie with CBS for second place in the season-to-date ratings with a 16.8 rating and a 26 share. NBC has the first-place season-to-date position with a 17.8 rating and a 28 share.

In the evening news race, CBS continues its lead, followed by NBC and ABC.
