Still looking for room at the top? There are three right ways to get there, according to researchers for the University of Michigan.

A survey of 1,100 just-promoted business execs finds the fastest tracks to the top of a corporation are in marketing-sales, general management-administration and finance accounting.

The survey also shows the successful executive in 1985 to be–surprise–a white male, 47 years old, Protestant and married once to a wife who usually does not work outside the home. He also is a first child born in the East or Midwest, has an advanced university degree and is employed in a manufacturing business.

Those in top management enjoy a median salary of $129,000, have a free car, club membership, stock options, cash bonuses and deferred compensation.
