It`s 4:55 p.m. In three minutes, ”The Beachcomber,” the South Shore Line commuter train to Hegewisch and points east, will be pulling out on Track 9.

A hard rain is falling. The long wooden platform is wet and slippery.

”Last call,” booms a voice in the darkness.

A young woman races along the platform toward the front of the train.

”Don`t fall,” says one of the conductors solicitously, as she runs past him.

And, after she has slowed to a walk and is out of earshot, he turns to the guy standing next to him:

”I hate filling out accident reports.”
