Boeing Co. has told air carriers that its 747 jumbo jets should be modified to protect the tail section from damage and make it more resistant to stress. A spokesman said the modifications weren`t specifically ordered because of the Aug. 12 crash of a Japan Air Lines jet that killed 520 people, but developed from inspections of the worldwide 747 fleet made after the crash.
