It promised to be a really big show: the first annual fashion show by Chicago`s NAAFA, the National Association to Aid Fat Americans.

The program, at the Hotel Continental, would have propelled Rubens into ecstasy–especially the lingerie segment (which tried, as organizer Susan Sychta said, to instill ”fat pride” and prove that ”good things do come in BIG packages”).

There was only one major clunker–a gray pinstripe polyester dress. But for the most part the clothes from area boutiques that specialize in fitting

”large-size women” were quite stylish. The ensembles included everything from furs to stretch pants in sizes ranging from 14 to 30.

”And, contrary to earlier newspaper reports, we did not have a specially designed reinforced runway,” said show commentator Holly Quandt. —
