Jeane Kirkpatrick has left the United Nations in peace and surfaced as a regular contributor to The Tribune. Commenting on the Guatemalan elections, she hails the ”return of democracy.” Her ignorance is showing again.
Latin American elections have never demonstrated democracy, particularly since the military often pulls the strings of the civilian puppets. To illustrate: Candidates in the recent Guatemalan elections refused to call for land reform, accepted the new governmental structure granting ultimate power to the military, and agreed to absolve the military from responsibility for nearly 100,000 deaths and disappearances during the last 50 years of its reign of terror. So much for democracy.
