Often described by Mike Ditka as ”the best offensive-line coach in football,” Dick Stanfel is in his fifth year with the Bears.
Stanfel joined the Bears in 1981 after serving as the New Orleans Saints` interim head coach for the final four games of 1980. He began his coaching career at Notre Dame (1959-62) and his pro coaching career on the Philadelphia Eagles` staff in 1964. In `71, he joined the 49ers as line coach and in `76 went to the Saints.
Stanfel played football at the University of San Francisco and spent nine years in the National Football League. The four-time All-Pro guard played four years with the Detroit Lions. He also played for the Washington Redskins
(1956-58).
Stanfel, born on July 20, 1927, in San Francisco, has three children and resides in Libertyville.
