It is difficult to keep a civil tongue when responding to such editorial arrogance as that expressed in ”Central American campaigns” in The Tribune of Dec. 27. Your argument that since the administration has cheated in its use of the authorized $27 million for ”humanitarian” purposes (shades of Orwell`s vision), that it is therefore time the U.S. provided direct military assistance is an outrage.
Your naivete that things ”are apparently moving toward a remarkable state of stability” is not believable. You are in for some surprises in Central America. If you really think Cerezo-Aravalo`s election in Guatemala has changed anything, wait a few months. The military is in charge and has no intention of going anywhere. And Duarte`s days are numbered in El Salvador. Your editorial writers are reading the wrong newspapers.
