What is it with this ”basically”? Is it possible these days to hear a simple, declarative sentence, whether in a TV interview or in ordinary conversation, without its being prefaced by ”basically”? ”Basically, I would say that yuppies are here to stay”; or, ”Basically, my garbage is not being picked up.”

Just how the adverb relates to the rest of the sentence is, in most cases, not readily apparent. Certainly the use of ”basically” suggests that something profound or otherwise meaningful is about to be uttered, but what usually follows is trite and obvious.

Can`t we do better–basically?
