Louis Hartz, a longtime professor of government at Harvard University whose work in political theory and comparative history influenced and inspired a generation of scholars, has died in Istanbul. He was 66.
Turkish officials said Mr. Hartz, who left Harvard after more than 30 years in 1974 and devoted the rest of his life to travel and research, died apparently after suffering an epileptic seizure Monday.
His writings, notably his 1955 work, ”The Liberal Tradition in America,” offered an original view of the nation`s past, one that sought to explain its conspicuous absence of ideologies.
