A segment involving the Tooth Fairy on Friday`s episode of ”The Twilight Zone” (7 p.m. on CBS-Ch. 2) prompted the network`s Standards and Practices folks to suggest another way to handle a sensitive issue. In the original episode, a despondent dentist (played by David Birney) tries to hang himself but is saved by the Tooth Fairy.

S&P thought this idea might prompt similar action on the part of youngsters wanting to ”meet” the Tooth Fairy. So the producers were asked to rewrite the scene. In the new version, the Tooth Fairy still comes to the rescue of the dentist, but in a different way.

A CBS spokesman says ”Tooth and Consequences” is the most comedic segment since the series began last fall. Currently, ”The Twilight Zone”

ranks in 50th place out of 80 shows in the season-to-date A.C. Nielsen ratings.

The other two segments on Friday`s show concern a missing father and a man sentenced to a year of ostracism by his fellow citizens.
