Addison Trail claimed a share of the Des Plaines Valley League championship Thursday night when LeAnn Kerber scored with 5 seconds remaining to lift the Blazers to a 37-35 victory over Hinsdale South in Addison.
The victory gave the Blazers a 20-5 overall record and matched Hinsdale South`s 9-1 record in the conference.
Melanee Ehrhardt scored 16 points and Chris Geraci added 8 for Addison Trail, which led 16-15 at the half. Beckey Blamer had 11 points and Dawn Rosenlund 10 for Hinsdale South.
Lake Zurich 101, Marian Central 29–Lisa Foss, the leading scorer in the state, poured in a career-high 56 points to power Lake Zurich (22-2, 14-0), No. 9 in The Tribune poll, to the Northwest Suburban Conference victory.
Streamwood 45, East Aurora 43–Tracy Matchinski (15 points, 12 rebounds)
sank a basket at the buzzer and Rose Dirks added 12 points and 8 rebounds to propel Streamwood (18-6, 12-2) in the Upstate Eight. Stephanie Ingram had 13 points for East Aurora (17-7, 9-4).
Elgin 69, Larkin 67 (2 OT)–Larkin`s Sherri Schrieber (16 points) sank two free throws with no time remaining to send the Upstate Eight game into overtime tied at 55. Elgin`s Pat Brassel sank the front end of a one-and-one with 4 seconds left to tie the game at 61 and force a second overtime. Elgin`s Yvette Clark, who finished with 7 points, scored 6 of them in the second OT. Elgin`s (16-7, 9-5) Heidi Hilliard led all scorers with 22 points.
Buffalo Grove 56, Elk Grove 43–The Bison (19-6) never let Elk Grove
(17-7) get into the game while winning the Mid-Suburban League overall title. Jennifer Rood and Cindy Peterson had 14 points apiece and Betsy Henderson 13 for the winners, who outscored Elk Grove 18-10 in the second quarter to lead 32-19 at the half.
GCAC playoffs–St. Gregory (23-0) hammered Providence-St. Mel 82-39 to earn a berth in the Section II (small school) finals at St. Benedict Saturday. Vickey Pettry (27 points, 11 assists), Tracy Escher (21 points, 8 rebounds)
and Debbie Stegmann (15 points) led the Greyhounds. . . . Immaculate Heart of Mary (20-3) edged Mother McAuley 49-47 in a Section I (large school) semifinal at Maria behind Michele Savage`s 22 points. McAuley (19-4) missed two free throws and three attempts after the rebound in the last four seconds.
BOYS` BASKETBALL
Simeon 59, Carver 49–Simeon (23-0, 12-0), ranked No. 1 in the Chicago area, the state and the country, overcame an 18-16 first-quarter deficit to lead 29-22 at halftime. David Gordon led the Wolverines with 22 points. Ervin Small added 18. Odell Bell had 15 for Carver (16-8, 8-4).
Collins 61, Westinghouse 56–The Public League Red-West champion (21-4, 13-1) coasted behind Michael New`s 20 points and Randy Brown`s 16. Creshawn Harris and Otis Clay had 16 each for Westinghouse (14-11, 7-7).
Near North 68, Juarez 53–Joe Herron scored 21 points as Near North
(13-9, 7-7) won in the Blue-West. Greg Powell had 20 for Juarez (0-22, 0-14), which suffered its 87th straight loss.
