On Feb. 17, there was an attack by antigovernment forces in northern Nicaragua. It was an ambush of unarmed civilians, and five people were killed, including four Nicaraguan women and a Swiss agricultural adviser.
The next day, President Reagan asked Congress to give $100 million more to these same contras. As a Chicago-area resident currently staying in Nicaragua, I know people who have firsthand experience of the terror that the ”freedom fighters” specialize in–generally, unprovoked killings of doctors, teachers and others involved in development work.
The Nicaraguan people do not want the contras, and giving them more funding will only result in further tragedies.
