A Chicago Fire Department helicopter was damaged and a firefighter was injured slightly in what officials called a ”hard landing” at Meigs Field Thursday afternoon. The helicopter, a 25-year-old Bell Huey used for rescue and surveillance, was practicing ”touch-and-go” landings when it touched down hard on the runway, said Jerry Lawrence, a fire department spokesman. A firefighter on board observing the exercise suffered a shoulder injury and was examined at the scene, Lawrence said. The helicopter`s two pilots were not hurt. The helicopter, one of three fire department aircraft based at Meigs, was removed from the airfield by crane with its runners damaged, he said.
