Jami (”Square Pegs”) Gertz has three movies coming out this year:
”Quicksilver,” ”Crossroads” and ”Solarbabies.” ”I`m either in for a lot of congratulations or condolences,” says the 20-year-old actress. If the movies are smashes and Gertz is singled out for special praise, ”Life will be a little easier for me,” she says. ”When I audition, I won`t have to sell so hard. People will want to see me.” And if the un-speakable happens and the movies–along with Gertz–quietly disappear? ”I can always quit and go to law school.”
S-E-Q-U-E-L is one way to spell ”success” in Hollywood. But don`t hold your breath if you`re waiting for what could be the greatest sequel of all time, ”Godfather III.” Although Paramount has made no fewer than seven attempts to get an acceptable script and spent $800,000 in the process, prospects are not good. What`s the problem? Money–or the lack of it–says Gallery magazine in its April issue: ”When the original `Godfather` was made, Al Pacino, James Caan, and Robert Duvall were virtually all unknowns. None received more than $35,000. . . To hire Al Pacino today, which is considered essential for the success of `Godfather III,` would cost $3 million plus about 10 percent of the gross.”
Jazz means ”deviating from the melody,” and, says jazz star Carmen McRae, everybody, even those not usually categorized as jazz singers–Ray
Charles, Nancy Wilson, Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra–does it. ”I haven`t heard them sing one song yet the way it was written,” says McRae in ”Chuck Stewart`s Jazz Files.”
