The Soviet Union announced a crackdown on rampant corruption, black marketeering and waste, imposing death sentences for some bribe-taking government officials and two years in labor camps for farmers fattening cattle with bread.

The anticorruption decree issued Tuesday by the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet, the country`s main executive branch, was designed to stamp out illegal incomes.
