Parents: John and Noralyn Canfield. Canfield has written computer programs for scoring and interpreting six psychological tests. He is a member of the JETS team (Junior Engineering and Technical Society), having won in physics and mathematics competitions at the regional level. He is a member of the school orchestra, the chamber orchestra and the Latin Club. He was named the most-improved runner last year on the cross-country team.
NANCY CHANG
NILES NORTH HIGH SCHOOL, SKOKIE
Parents: Carl and Lifu Chang. Chang is one of only eight high school seniors in the United States who scored a perfect 1,600 points by answering correctly all 145 verbal and math questions in the Scholastic Aptitude Test given to college-bound students. Chang, valedictorian in a class of 424 and a Merit Scholar, has been North Suburban Conference spelling champion, orchestra president and editor of the student literary magazine.
MAUREEN FAHEY
MARILLAC HIGH SCHOOL, NORTHFIELD
Parents: Thomas and Marilyn Fahey. Fahey was top scorer in her school for three years in the Illinois Mathematics League contest. She has won school biology, mathematics, Spanish and physical education awards. She was named to the regional all-star varsity basketball team, and she has been vice president for a Junior Achievement club, chairwoman of a local blood drive, an academic tutor, a swimming instructor and a member of the track and volleyball teams.
RYAN JERVING
LIBERTYVILLE HIGH SCHOOL
Parents: Wesley and Carol Jerving. Jerving has a straight-A average except for B`s in physical education, and he is the winner of the 1986 E. Ward Just Journalism Foundation scholarship. He is the chief contributor for an independently produced literary magazine, writes songs played by a band he organized, leads a church guitar group and plays in a school jazz ensemble. He also has participated in school musicals for the last three years.
JACQUELYN SMITH
MAINE EAST HIGH SCHOOL, PARK RIDGE
Parents: Richard and Judith Smith. Smith, valedictorian in a class of 715, has been National Honor Society president for two years. She received the Daughters of the American Revolution award in U.S. history and got school awards in science, mathematics, Spanish, art and social science. She maintained a straight-A average except for B`s in physical education. She is a suburban newspaper columnist and a volunteer at hospitals and nursing homes.
CAROLINE SOTER
LAKE FOREST HIGH SCHOOL
Parents: Richard and Margaret Soter. Soter, a straight-A student and valedictorian in a class of 298, is a Merit Scholar. She has won regional awards in French, physics and mathematics. She is co-captain of the varsity swimming team and has been a conference champion and qualifier in the state meet for four years. In her sophomore, junior and senior years, she was rated among the top 12 students in Illinois in the girls` swimming competition.
AIMEE VENDL
LAKE PARK HIGH SCHOOL, ROSELLE
Parents: Robert and Marnie Vendl. Vendl, who ranked first in a class of 582 and is a Merit Scholar, missed a straight-A average by one B in physical education. She was a first-place winner in the state academic decathlon, and she won the vault competition in a state gymnastics meet. Her community service includes two dance-a-thons for muscular dystrophy, two bike-a-thons for multiple sclerosis and entertaining at a nursing home.
