Parent: Patricia Berger. Berger is the school`s first-place winner in secretarial practice and second in typing, president of Senior Girls Council, treasurer of the Flag and Rifle Squad, secretary of the Law Club. She was awarded scholastic letters in her freshman, sophomore and junior years and received a plaque for academic achievement. A member of the Drama Club, she was named best actress in a school play and best director in a district play competition.

HENRY CARAG

ST. IGNATIUS COLLEGE PREP

Parents: Henry and Grace Carag. Winner of awards from the Philippine Educators of America and regional and state mathematics contests and president of Club A.S.I.A., Henry has an A average except for a B in physical education. He received first honors with distinction seven semesters. He is in-school tutoring co-director. During two summers, he made wilderness trips into Canada. Last summer he was a lab assistant at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory.

JI CHOI

VON STEUBEN HIGH SCHOOL

Parents: Sung and In Choi. A Korean immigrant, Ji Choi has spoken English only six years. With a straight-A average in all major subjects but one, she is valedictorian of a class of 164 and a Merit Scholar. She is a city and regional winner in mathematics, science, history, engineering and Shakespeare contests. She is National Honor Society chapter president, news editor of the school newspaper and a soloist in the school choir and the Korean Gospel Choir.

LAKE VIEW HIGH SCHOOL

Parent: Rosa Saez. ROTC cadet of the year at her school, Patricia Cruz is winner of the Brown University book award, won district science fair honors, is senior class secretary, yearbook editor, National Honor Society chapter vice president and Hi-Q Society president and a member of the French Club, math team, Science Club and Drama Club. She was an exchange student in Mexico and has taken part in a food drive for the hungry and drives for the homeless. MARTINA DIAZ

PROSSER VOCATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

Parent: Hermila Diaz. Valedictorian in a class of 306, Martina Diaz is winner of the National Hispanic Scholar and United States Leadership Merit awards, is an American Airlines scholar, won the United States Leadership Award and was given two scholar awards by De Paul University. She is National Honor Society chapter vice president and treasurer, a member of the Spanish and home economics clubs, the Spanish church choir and the volleyball league. MOIR DONELSON

JULIAN HIGH SCHOOL

Parents: Franklin and Bobbi Jo Donelson. President of the Black on Black Love school chapter and senior class president, Moir Donelson is a first-place winner in a regional math contest and a junior citizen contest. He is valedictorian in a class of 331, president of Big Brother/Big Sister, vice president of the math team, an all-conference football player, member of the marching band and jazz band and chairman of the junior deacon board at Berean Baptist Church.

JAMES ERICKSON

KENWOOD ACADEMY

Parent: Nicole Erickson. Erickson placed first in a Midwest math contest, second in an Illinois Benedictine College chemistry competition and third in a state math contest. He scored in the top 5 percent in an international chemistry contest. He is a Merit Scholar, a member of the National Honor Society and a math tutor. He coaches a Little League baseball team and has taken part in Knights of Columbus and Kiwanis Club fund drives.

WILLIAM FLENS

QUIGLEY SEMINARY SOUTH

Parents: Stanley and Virginia Flens. For the last two years, William Flens has studied only honors or advanced placement courses. He is editor of the school newspaper, assistant religion teacher for freshmen and winner of school awards for Latin, drama, English, history, mathematics and chemistry. He ranks first in a class of 163. A skier and a scuba diver, Flens is an auxiliary eucharistic minister, lector and server at his church and a soup-line volunteer.

LAURA GERBEC

LANE TECH HIGH SCHOOL

Parents: Gordon and Marlene Gerbec. A straight-A student except for B`s in four required shop and drafting courses at the state`s largest high school, Laura Gerbec is a regional winner in oral mathematics competition, recipient of 15 school math awards and the Brown University book award and has been a talent show participant and track team member. She also was a 4th-grade catechism instructor and volunteer cooking and crafts teacher.

VANESSA GRIFFIN

FENGER HIGH SCHOOL

Parents: Robert and Lillie Griffin. Griffin, a Principal`s Scholars Program member, is a winner of seven awards in the Chicago, national and NAACP science fairs, has been Science Club president two years, is associate editor of the school newspaper, vice president of the Math Club and a member of the yearbook staff, pompon squad, JETS Club and Big Brother/Big Sister. She teaches Sunday school at Zion Lutheran Church.

MICHAEL HARLIN BROTHER RICE HIGH SCHOOL

Parents: Thomas and Joanne Harlin. Harlin is president of the Student Council and news editor of the school newspaper. His other activities include swimming, water polo, drama, the school musical, stage crew and the Spanish Club. He ranks first in a class of 390 and is a Merit Scholar. For the last two years, he has been an English composition tutor in the school`s writing laboratory. He was named outstanding junior of 1985.

GIA HUFF LINDBLOM HIGH SCHOOL

Parents: Samuel and Lilly Huff. Huff is a National Honor Society and school Honor Society member and has been active in the school`s Drama Club, French Club, Student Council, Senior Girls Council, pre-collegiate and career explorers programs and with the stage crew. She has won National Achievement Commended Scholar and Illinois State Scholar awards. She is very active in her church with the choir and youth group.

FELICIA KEELEN

HYDE PARK CAREER ACADEMY

Parent: Caletha Keelen. Valectorian in a class of 511, Felicia Keelen is a straight-A student with perfect attendance for the first seven semesters. She is a winner of the Harvard Club of Chicago book prize, spent last July on the University of Maryland campus to study the world of business and was one of 300 students in the country to participate in a leadership developing program in business sponsored by A Better Chance Inc. in Boston.

JOSE MARTINEZ

JUAREZ HIGH SCHOOL

Parents: Cleto and Maria Martinez. First in a class of 330, Jose Martinez is a district science fair winner, twice a science winner in the Academic Olympics, school newspaper editor and Computer Club president. He attended computer camp at De Paul University, worked as a computer programmer at Rush- Presbyterian-St. Luke`s Medical Center and attended an engineering camp at the University of Notre Dame. He has taken special classes at De Paul for 3 1/ 2 years.

MATTHEW PILDITCH

MORGAN PARK HIGH SCHOOL

Parents: Walter and Joyce Pilditch. Son of the Morgan Park principal, Matthew Pilditch has been a city and district winner in the Voice of Democracy contest, Chicago State University Model United Nations program, Chicago History Fair and National High School Mathematics Exam. He served as president of the Key Club and German Club, is an Eagle Scout, six-time winner of the Scout of the Year award in his troop and chief usher for his church.

DANIEL STODOLSKY

YOUNG MAGNET HIGH SCHOOL

Parent: Susan Stodolsky. Valedictorian in a class of 483 and a member of the state champion academic decathlon team, Daniel Stodolsky has won awards in the University of Santa Clara nuclear magnetic resonance competition, the American Chemical Society competition, the Palo Alto High School creative writing contest and the computing machinery competition. He has been a computer programmer at both Stanford University and the University of Chicago. MARK VIZ

MARIST HIGH SCHOOL

Parents: Stephen and Marilyn Viz. Valedictorian in a class of 532 and a straight-A student, Mark Viz won a one-week trip to Washington, D.C., in a Union Carbide Corp. essay contest, was given a physics award by the Illinois Science Teachers Association, received his school`s Young Scientist Award and was a winner in a regional mathematics contest. Last year, he toured with a band to play Christmas songs for mentally retarded young adults.

SCOTT WASSERSTROM

MATHER HIGH SCHOOL

Parents: Henry and Marlene Wasserstrom. Valedictorian in a class of 374, Scott Wasserstrom has won city science fair awards for three years, including one for a project in the pediatrics microbiology laboratory at the University of Chicago`s Wyler Children`s Hospital. He was chief writer and lead player for Mather`s annual musical comedy, received the Harvard book award for scholarship and achievement and was an editorial assistant for Pro Football Weekly Magazine.
