A quarter of a million steel industry jobs will disappear in the United States, Japan and Europe by 1995, along with at least 80 million tons of steelmaking capacity, according to a long-term study of the industry. Chase Econometrics, a Bala Cynwyd, Pa., forecasting firm, predicts the Big Three steelmaking regions will close at least 25 integrated steel works, several mini mills and even some specialty steelmakers.
