Cardinal Bernardin`s pronouncement about bingo is to be commended and especially his statement about tithing. His Christian leadership in Chicago is an inspiration to all of us.
I do want to call your attention to a statement by the Right Reverend James W. Montgomery, episcopal bishop of Chicago in 1981, which also categorically opposes gambling. It has been a most useful directive for our parishes and missions.
May the cardinal continue to provide us with his Christian leadership.
