Shareholders of American Stores Co. approved a proposal to double the company`s authorized common stock to 100 million shares. The company said it would use the additional shares for corporate capital purposes, stock dividends, employee stock options, stock splits or acquisitions. American Stores operates 1,497 retail stores in 40 states, including Jewel Food Stores.
